Artist’s Statement:

My creative practice is driven by a desire to experiment, tinker, and play. Although I have always considered 2-D illustration and painting to be my “home base,” my enthusiasm for using mixed media and sculptural materials has piqued over the last year. Playing with found objects, polymer clay, and craft materials has allowed me to explore the comical, mischievous, childlike, and tender ways in which ideas can be communicated.

Conceptually, my work centers around systems, arrangements, and relationships through the guise of technology and machinery. I love transforming technological objects in order to play with the viewer’s preconceived notions of their forms and functions. My hope is to spark the audience’s curiosity. What associations do we make based on color and texture? Is there aesthetic integrity to be found in softness, squishiness, sparkliness, and cuteness? Why do humans tend to assign emotions to inanimate objects? What qualities make an object recognizable? Lovable? I’ve found that our brains and hearts tend to function in the same way that machinery does, and my goal is to help viewers forge unexpected connections between themselves and the artwork.
